The yen crowd flipped in a single print —
and oil’s record long crossed $100 after the close.

Verdict
  • The yen short is gone: +103,023 in one print, the biggest FX flip of the year, as USD/JPY fell to 154.
  • WTI and copper both printed record longs — then oil crossed $100 and copper fell −4% after the close.
  • Grains held +100 into a falling tape and a bearish-surprise WASDE; the yield backup resumed, +18–23bp since.

From a squeeze firing to a crowd flipped net long — in one print
Last week the yen short had deepened −28,929 to rel −56 and the squeeze fired after the close (+2.5% on BoJ hike bets). This week the whole position went: longs +61,622, shorts −41,401, net from −92,227 to +10,796 (rel −56 → +14), the biggest FX flip of the year, as the yen ripped +3.9% in the COT week to 153.97 and held since at 153.47 with Bessent warning against betting on a weaker yen and a BoJ hike to 1.25% on 18-Sep priced. There is no short left to squeeze. The risk has changed shape: a young long crowd into a BoJ decision. CAD covered +37,644 the same way (rel −60 → −39), while the European shorts reloaded (EUR −34 → −59, CHF −52 → −68).

WTI’s crowd hit a record — then oil crossed $100
Last week the crowd re-chased the war premium to rel 94. This week it printed a fresh 52-week-high net of +111,731 (longs +13,660, shorts −3,790, rel 100) as WTI rose +3.1% in the COT week — and then the price ran +7.5% since to $100.05, the first close above $100 in nearly four months, as Hormuz flows fell under 2m b/d, tankers and Saudi infrastructure were hit and Saudi August output dropped ~1.9m b/d. OPEC+ held October quotas on 6-Sep. RBOB followed (rel 93). Diesel’s crowd cut −4,985 into a −2.3% week and then diesel ran +8.6% since. NatGas’s short pressed to −72 and the price finally fell −2.9%. A maxed crowd with the physical world on its side: the tail and the short veto on the same contract.

A record copper long the week the LME draw ended
Last week copper was the tight name — a record crowd trimming into a dip with LME stocks down 42 straight days to ~205kt. This week the crowd maxed instead: longs +6,577, shorts −2,695 (net +9,272 to +82,154, a fresh 52-week high, rel 100) as copper rose +3.4% in the COT week — and then fell −4.0% since to $6.548, below its 20-day, as LME stocks rebuilt to ~238kt by 8-Sep and the draw ended. The physical tightness that vetoed the short eased the same week the position peaked. Copper moves from the tight list to the tail list: the purest unwind tail on the board. Gold deleveraged (both legs cut, rel 84) and made a one-month low since; silver was bought then fell −6% in a day.

Still four books at +100 — into a falling tape and a WASDE that beat every estimate
Last week corn, beans, meal, SRW and HRW all sat at rel +100 and the wheat rally had just started to fade. This week the crowd kept adding at the ceiling: corn +13,456 to a 52-week-high +414,459 into a −2.3% week, beans +22,338 to +257,258 on a flat week — while SRW’s base-effect crowd emptied exactly as flagged (longs −9,108, rel 100 → 33, price −4.5%) and HRW and meal deleveraged. Then Friday’s WASDE: corn yield cut to 178.5 and stocks to 1.6bn, but the soy yield RAISED to 52.8 when the trade expected a cut, and every headline above the trade estimate — corn −0.7%, beans −2.7% on the day. Since the print corn −0.6%, beans −1.5%, SRW −2.9%, HRW −2.5%. The most crowded class on the board is adding while the price slips; the unwind is the crowd’s risk to carry.

Trimmed on a flat week — then the backup resumed after the close
Last week real money bought a 17–23bp yield backup and the 10Y long hit a record. This week, on a flat yield week (10Y −0bp, 5Y +1bp, 2Y unchanged at 4.40%), asset managers made their first real trim in eleven weeks — 5Y −80,658, 10Y −42,532, Bond −11,802 — while re-adding the 2Y +24,787. Then the price moved against the crowd again: since the print the 2Y +23bp to 4.63% (highest since January 2025), 5Y +22bp, 10Y +18bp to 4.97% (brushing 5%), 30Y +11bp, as the August CPI (headline +0.4% m/m, core +0.3%) took September hike odds to ~90% into the 15–16 Sep FOMC. Every tenor bar the 2Y is still a crowded long (10Y 98, Ultra 10Y 97, Bond 89, Ultra Bond 86, 5Y 74) that just took another price hit.

Nasdaq’s short rebuilt; the Russell record held into a rise, then got paid
Last week the Nasdaq record short had covered +26,282 (rel −18) and the Russell short hit a fresh record −100 into a −3.0% week. This week the shorts pressed or held into a rising tape: Nasdaq rebuilt −18,850 (rel −18 → −37) into +1.5%, the S&P deepened −27,651 (rel −64 → −69) into +0.6%, the Russell record held (−110,147) into +1.4% — all offside on the week. Since the print all three fell (Russell −1.9% to 2,904 below every SMA, Nasdaq −0.5%, S&P −0.2%) as the 2Y jumped +23bp, so the crowd is being paid for now. The VIX short-vol book shrank slightly (rel −25); dealers +52,894. FOMC 16-Sep is the catalyst under all of it.

Do not force these
Reading NZD’s +100 as a big crowdIt is a base effect — the first net long in the 52-week window, on +6,232 contracts, and the kiwi fell −0.7% into it.
Still calling the yen a squeezeThe short is gone — +103,023 in one print — so there is no fuel left; the new risk is a young long crowd into the 18-Sep BoJ.
Fading WTI’s record long because it is “crowded”Hormuz flows under 2m b/d and record tanker rates back the crowd; shorting a crowded long tested 0 of 7 years and the veto holds.

Why no trades: the 6-year, roll-drag-corrected test found v1’s direction calls dead at 1–8 week holds and shorting a crowded long the single worst rule (0 of 7 years). v1 displays; v2 decides.
